After background on the visual cultures of West Africa, particularly those of Yoruba origin, we discuss the transformative impact of Atlantic World slavery and colonial institutions on African traditions. We will read slave narratives, historical accounts of slavery, and philosophical interpretations of slavery from the black radical tradition and contemporary philosophy.
